Pastor Aaron McMillan
Minister of Church Life
Aaron has served at Heights since January 2008 after several years on the move with his wife Amy, their four young children and Kirk the dog. Born in Arkansas and raised in Memphis Tennessee, Aaron first felt the call to ministry while attending Mississippi College. Together Aaron and Amy have spent time in ministry in Mississippi, Colorado, Tennessee, Alabama and now New Mexico.
Along the way, Aaron has earned degrees from Denver Seminary in the Philosophy of Religion and Memphis Theological Seminary in Divinity. Although Aaron is a lifelong Cumberland Presbyterian, he has no doubt that God can and does move through any church where God’s Word is honored and Jesus Christ adored.
One day Aaron will be seen riding his mountain bike through Albuquerque, but right now he mostly just talks about it. Perhaps God will grow Aaron past this “block” in his life. Come visit us at Heights and find out!
Pastor Don Wilson
Minister of Congregational Care
Pastor Don Wilson has served as Director of
Congregational Care at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church since
September 1, 1992. Don is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Bethel
College, McKenzie, TN, and is a Masters of Divinity, Cum Laude
graduate from Memphis Theological Seminary, Memphis, TN.
Don was born in Raton, NM,
and has spent most of his life in the state. He and his wife Linda
have been married for over 36 years and have two married daughters
and three grandchildren. They are discovering that grand parenting
is God’s reward for the sacrifices of parenting!
Don and Linda first began
attending Heights in 1971 and became very active in church life
until leaving for Tennessee in 1983 where he began pastoring while
completing college and seminary.
Don points to II Corinthians
1:3-5 as the foundational Scripture for Congregational Care at HCPC:
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, Who comforts us in
all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with
the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the
sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through
Christ our comfort overflows.”
Dr. Marty Goehring
Minister of Counseling Family Therapy of Albuquerque, Inc.
Marty was born and raised in Albuquerque. As a young boy he attended
the Catholic Church. There he learned the sacredness of faith and
the central importance of spirituality. Marty has been involved with
Heights Church since 1970, when he joined as a high school freshman.
His faith was profoundly encouraged during his time in the college
age youth group at Heights—a time that he views as foundational for
the development of his personal relationship with God.
During his college years at
the University of New Mexico, God gave Marty a passionate desire to
join people in developing their relationship with Him in the midst
of the struggles of life. This led him to further study at the
Graduate School of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary. There
he earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and an M.A. in Theology in
1985. After nine years in private practice in Pasadena, California,
Heights called Marty to the position of Director of Family Therapy
of Albuquerque in 1994. There he has had the privilege of working
alongside others who are dedicated to helping people experience
healing, growth and a deeper relationship with God through the tools
of the counseling ministry. In addition to his vocation as a
licensed psychologist, Marty was ordained as a Cumberland
Presbyterian Minister in 1999. Since 1979, Marty has been married to
Cheryl, who is God's greatest gift to his life. They have two
daughters, Kelly and Katie, who fill their lives with great joy.
Ruth Collier
Minister of Finance and Administration
Ruth was born and raised in the suburbs of
Detroit, Michigan. She attended Faith Cumberland Presbyterian
Church where, at the age of nine, accepted Jesus Christ. While at
Faith Church, she learned of the denomination’s school, Bethel
College in McKenzie, Tennessee, where in1986 she earned a B.S. in
Business Administration. Upon graduation, she moved to Memphis,
Tennessee for a short time. In 1987, Ruth saw a picture of the
Balloon Fiesta in a National Geographic magazine and decided to move
to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Having attended a Cumberland
Presbyterian Church in Michigan and found the teaching to be
biblically sound, the decision to attend Heights CP Church was a
logical choice. She became a member in 1988 and has been involved
in serving at one time or another from the nursery to the senior
high youth and sanctuary choir.
Ruth enjoys listening to
radio bible teachers, being at home with her two cats, and spending
time with family.
Steve Gokool
Minister of Worship and Music
Steve joined us in late October of 2007 as the Minister of Music. He and his wife Monica moved here from Toronto, Canada in March of 2000, where they were both born and raised. Steve received his Bachelors in Vocal Performance from the University of Toronto with a minor in Composition and Art History. He has recorded over 9 cds with Warner Chappell on their series “Music is Canada” and recorded and sang the theme song “My Sight Will Go On” for the Vision Awards in Hollywood, raising funds for Retinitis Pigmentosa a degenerative eye disease. Steve also recorded in Nashville his CD entitled “At the Cross” with as he put it “some of the best guys and gals in the business”. As a highly acclaimed helden-tenor he travelled Canada and the U S. and performed operas and oratorios. However, the call of God was on his life strongly and he knew that God would use him more powerfully in music ministry. Steve is very excited about being here at Heights. “I see God moving in ways here that are so exciting and fresh, can’t wait to see how God will manifest his presence here for the people here and the new generation of Christians God will raise here.” Amen.
